What To Expect:
When: Sundays @ 5:00 PM

The very first thing we'll ask of you is this: relax. You're with friends & neighbors. We're not going to flag you as a "newbie" or ask you to pray in public your first week. We want to do whatever we can to help ease anxiety, and help you focus on your relationship with God.

And here are a couple other things you might expect:

A Casual Atmosphere
We want it to feel like home at Lifehouse. Dress casually. Grab a cup of coffee – we serve Stumptown! We’re going to have a good time.

Kid Friendly, Mother Approved
If you've got "tiny tots" (birth to 6th grade), drop them off either at our nursery or the Kids area (follow the signs downstairs) where they'll laugh and jump and sing and learn about truths that pertain to their lives (not in any particular order).

Live Band
The music at Lifehouse is engaging and meaningful. On any given Sunday, you'll experience songs that bring you closer to the heart of God.

Messages That Connect
You won't hear any high- pressure pitches or drawn-out guilt trips - just honest talks that show you how God's truths for life are real and
relevant.

Compassion SE Before Opportunities -

For the last 3 years, Lifehouse has had a key role in Compassion SE. CSE will be held at Lane Middle School in the Brentwood-Darlington neighborhood, Saturday, June 26 from 9 to 4 PM.

Here are several ways you can be involved:

Flyers: a group is needed to pass out informational flyers on June 10th from 6 to 8 PM. It will be a great way to make our neighborhoods aware of this incredible event . To get involved, send an email to Joel at: jsommer@lifehouseportland.com

Baking: the day of the event there will be 200+ volunteers. A way that we as Lifehouse can care for them would be to bake some treats like cookies or muffins. If you would like to contribute some baked goodies, contact Tom: tvice@lifehouseportland.com

Lifehouse Kids

It is our desire to engage your child's heart with the truths of scripture through story and creativity. We do this by providing a safe and secure learning environment that is age-appropriate and meets the unique spiritual needs of your children.

Each Sunday is full of activity for our children. Activities include a story/main teaching time, scripture memorization, crafts, role playing, and music. Our children interact with basic Biblical truths at age-appropriate levels (currently from 3 years through 5th grade). Repeated concepts include: knowing and loving God, loving others, and making good choices.

Our check-in system: each child will be given a numbered clip and the parent will be given the matching tag at check-in. Then during check-out, the two tags are again matched up to ensure that the kids are released in a safe and secure manner.

Our deepest joys are experienced as we follow Jesus and express our devotion to Him in meaningful ways.

Devotion is an expression of our commitment to following Jesus with our lives. We express this devotion when we sing, pray, listen, give, and serve. Lifehouse is a place where you can come closer to God. Each week we gather to provide the opportunity to encounter Jesus through music, prayers, and Bible teaching.

We desire to become a transforming presence in our community, region, and the world as we use the resources entrusted to us to express the love and hope of Jesus.

We've always asked the question, "what would it look like if a church truly loved and cared for the community it lives in?" We envision ourselves as a church invested in our community by meeting the spiritual and physical needs as an extension of God’s love. As we continue to care for and love those around us, we find ourselves moving beyond our neighborhoods and into our global community.

Wyldlife

Aaron Kelsay
Working with Wyldlife in Southeast Portland.
Middle school is a time when kids make important decisions about who they are and what they believe. And so WyldLife leaders — who range from spiritually mature high school and college students to moms, dads and retirees — consider it a privilege to be involved in their lives. We seek to model and express God's love to our young friends by learning their names, hearing their stories and honoring their God-given desire for a life of fun, adventure and purpose.
Lifehouse's involvement ranges from monthly financial support, mentoring, to providing meals at their events.

Impact Northwest Dad's Play Group
Impact NW’s mission is to help people achieve and maintain self-sufficiency and to prevent and alleviate the effects of poverty.

Group info:
Community Dads Play Group (kids 3 years and younger)
What: Time for Dads to get together, share stories, eat pizza, play with their kids, etc.
Where: Brentwood-Darlington Community Center
When: 1st & 3rd Mondays, 1 Wednesday a month @ 6:00-7:30pm

Global Involvement

Our global involvement:

Ron and Lisa Ramsey
Ron and Lisa Ramsey are long-term missionaries working as international staff in Gjilan, Kosovo. Post war Gjilan struggles with a poor infrastructure and economy with an unemployment rate of 45-50 percent. With less than 1/10th of 1% of the population who are Christians in a city of approximately 130,000, there is a great need for the message of Jesus. Currently, Lisa is immersed in a full-time Albanian language program as she prepares to use her counseling degree to serve the Kosovar people. Ron participates in the language program part-time and also directs the Ringjallja Center, which exists to serve as a launching pad for church planting and Christ centered, wholistic community development in eastern Kosovo. The Ramseys are partnered with Compassion and Mercy Associates (CAMA), the relief and development arm of the Christian and Missionary Alliance.

We believe that everyone has something important and valuable to contribute. Our growing church has many areas to get involved in.

For our Sunday gatherings, if each person committed to helping out 2 Sundays each month we would have all our areas of need covered.

Areas to get involved:
-Guest Care
Demonstrate that guests are valued by assuring they are thought of ahead of time.
Positions include: Usher/greeter, hospitality (coffee & goodies), Set up/Tear down

-Lifehouse Kids
Take part in shaping the lives and faith of kids
Positions include: teacher, substitute, nursery, creative talent

-Music & Arts
Serve the Lifehouse community at our Sunday gatherings through music and the arts.
Positions include: artist, decorator, instrumentalist, media, sound tech, vocalist, writer

-Community Action
Engage in community action as an expression of our desire to serve and use our resources to demonstrate the love and hope of Jesus.

Power of Transformation

"What hope is there for me? How can I change?" Anonymous Addict

I meet with fellow addicts on a weekly basis. Sometimes we find ourselves the victims of our own broken lives. The habits, the hurts, and the wreckage of our lives not only weigh on us; but cause destruction in our hearts and relationships with others. While reading and praying I've had this nagging question, "how does God change and transform broken people?" I mean, what does it look like? How does it happen? What are the right circumstances for a change/transformation?

I'm not really sure what the answers are, but reading the ancient scriptures, it says that God's first step is moving into the lives of broken people. He's not waiting for people to show up ready... He comes to us! We see this most clearly through the sending of Jesus. He says,

He sent me to preach good news to the poor, heal the heartbroken, Announce freedom to all captives and to comfort all who mourn Rename them "Oaks of righteousness" planted by God to display his glory. They'll rebuild the old ruins; raise a new city out of the wreckage. They'll start over on the ruined cities, take the rubble left behind and make it new.

It is His power that breaks the long-fought addiction, heals the sick, and sets people free from whatever has a hold on their lives.

When you're broken and in need of change, you can feel weak. There is no strength in you. You feel ashamed and want to hide. Isolation is good, because you don't have to give an excuse to anyone. But when God meets a broken person He heals them and transforms them; giving them a new identity. He calls them oaks of righteousness! The oak tree is a sturdy, hardwood tree which lives to a great age. Here in Woodstock, we have some of the biggest trees I've ever seen. They create great shade; providing comfort during these hot weekends. When God transforms us we get a chance to start over. The wreckage of our lives becomes new! No longer do we hide in shame, but we can stand tall, providing comfort and stability for those still wrestling with the brokenness of their lives. As we experience His transformation, God calls us to move into the lives of others, believing that His power can transform them. We are to reach out and rebuild; working on behalf of a God who desires that our lives would be made new.

Because of sin, we live in a very broken society and among many broken people. Their lives are on the front page of the newspaper and headline the evening news. Their only hope to seeing change is the transforming power of God and we have an opportunity to participate in this process as we move towards starting this new church. We know that it is God's job to transform people. Only God can work change and renewal in the hearts of others, but we're called to partner with Him by loving and serving those around us. He sends us to bring the transformation to our neighborhoods - to be huge oak trees displaying His transformative power.

WHY START A CHURCH?

Jesus, tired from the long walk, sat wearily beside the well about noontime. Soon a Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, “Please give me a drink.”
John 4

Some have asked, “Why are you starting a church? Don’t we have enough?” I have so many reasons for starting a church. There’s the calling, there’s the dream, and there’s the need. Let’s talk about the need.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a well, but with all this heat lately, I’ve been thinking about thirst a lot. Why? I’m thirsty… and I have seen a lot of thirsty people. Ok, so now, imagine a hot, dry and arid setting – and it’s that way all the time... There’s an abundance of sand and a shortage of air conditioning. There’s no plumbing and the only way to get a cold, refreshing drink is by going to the town well. This is the setting for this encounter between Jesus and this woman. She approaches and what does He do? He asks for a drink and begins a conversation with her about her thirst… her spiritual thirst… her spiritual need. It’s at this point that we’re introduced to the real person. Here is a woman who is broken, hurt, rejected, and shamefully living a lifestyle that has been an unsuccessful attempt to satisfy her real thirst… her deep spiritual need. In the midst of her normal routine of marching out to the well, Jesus helps her see the big picture. He helps her to see her real need and the real solution to that need. In our neighborhood, we see people going through their daily routines. Going to work, going home, going to the store, going to the gas station – going everywhere. Simply marching out to their wells. We bump into them while they’re trying to figure out how to live and quench their thirsts. We are meeting them as they are trying to patch up their lives, trying to fix their pains, and trying to do anything about the thirst – the need in their lives. This is why we want to start a church. This is why we do not believe that there are enough. We have seen too many who do not know the truth about Jesus. We have seen too many walking out to their wells and will never “go” somewhere else for help. They’ll never find peace- they’ll never find the answer. We have seen too many who are marching out to their wells and will never have an encounter like this woman did unless somebody will go out to the well and be willing to start a conversation with them. We have seen so many who are hurting and dying with no hope of salvation unless somebody is willing to listen to their stories and be willing to engage in their lives… even if that means walking with them to their wells. We want to be at these wells in the same way Jesus was. Tried, exhausted, and thirsty –willing to show how the living water is the only hope for satisfying our deepest longings, needs, and desires. No matter how the needs may manifest themselves; whether through addictions, depression, materialism or a range of so many others; it is only Jesus, this living water, who can satisfy – no matter how great the need! We want to be where the thirsty are. We want to stop there, settle there, and open a church right there… right where real people with real needs are. Have you noticed the wells where you are?

Lifehouse: A Community of Faith in Process

Lifehouse is seeking to be an authentic community of faith in southeast Portland. We desire to see people that are created in the image of God, each precious, valuable person loved by God, know Him. This process of discovering Jesus and the search for truth doesn't begin and end with a profession of faith but begins with God's involvement in a person's life that continues for a lifetime.

We see ourselves as a growing community of seekers hoping to honestly experience who God is and what He has for us and our community. We realize that we don't know everything about life or God and that leaves plenty of room for humility and wonder as we seek to know Him more.

This is what we're dreaming about.
